Leadership is an essential component of the MySTL Catalyst School Program. STL is an acronym for Student Technology Leaders. Any student-centered program requires that at least some students become leaders- often this happens naturally as many students are excited to have the chance to meaningfully contribute alongside adults. The MySTL program provides these opportunities in a structured way so that their significance is not lost. We want students to be recognized for the role they play in making their school a dynamic, innovative institution.
MySTL provides curriculum and many opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills. Students practice their leadership skills by mentoring peers as they complete projects and by working with teachers to evaluate projects, do professional development, maintain infrastructure and develop ICT resources for the school.
The unfortunate truth is that many students who are inclined to ICT don’t get the same opportunities to develop these skills as students who are involved with team sports or student government. The MySTL Catalyst Schools program seeks to provide formal opportunities to recognize these students. ICT leadership is highly valued in society and schools shouldn’t neglect chances to cultivate these skills in their students.
